This film is not a “true” black-and-white film with a classic B/W emulsion. Instead, it uses a chromogenic emulsion that produces grayscale tones from color dyes. XP2 Super is therefore processed using the C41 color negative process, which can be handled by any standard photo lab.
The film features very fine grain and excellent resolution for its high sensitivity. Its sharpness performance is also very good. In terms of grain, sharpness, and resolution, it outperforms traditional crystal-structure ISO 400/27° films such as HP5+, Kentmere 400, Fomapan 400, or Tri-X.
It also has a very wide exposure latitude. The film can be exposed at an Exposure Index (E.I.) from 50/18° to 800/30° without requiring any adjustment to the development time. This makes XP2 Super ideal for older cameras with less accurate or no light meters, as well as for beginner film photographers.
Another strength of the film is its excellent detail retention in highlights and its ability to handle high-contrast subjects effectively.
XP2 Super 400 delivers its best sharpness and resolution when exposed within the E.I. 250/25° to 400/27° range.
Ilford XP2 Super 400 is the perfect black-and-white film for street photography, sports, action, reportage, and any situation where maximum exposure flexibility is required.
