The Panchromar M49 brown-red filter is a classic optical colour filter, mainly used for black and white film or creative photography. The brownish-red colour selectively modifies certain regions of the visible spectrum, resulting in unique tones and contrast - especially for landscapes, dramatic skies or characterful shadows.

The M49 designation means that the filter can be fitted into a 49 mm threaded lens barrel or adapter, which is the common filter size for most analogue and many modern lenses.

This type of filter works particularly well:

  • in black and white film, where the reddish-brown tones overpower the blue sky and create deeper tones,

  • for creative experimentation, if you're looking for visual effects with character rather than just natural images,

  • or if you want to add a unique character to your images, which you can achieve with a simple filter when exposing.

Typically found in the collections of analogue film photographers, similar Panchromar colour filters are common, with green, yellow, orange and red toned models - usually in M49 size, which is perfect for compact lenses.

  • Filter effect: red-brown filters darken blue skies more and increase the contrast between clouds, resulting in more dramatic black and white images.

  • Use: For analogue film, allow +1.5+3 stops of exposure compensation for red filters; for digital, it can be used for creative effects or in place of post-production.
