GERGELY CSIGÓ

A photographer who turns light into film

Gergely Csigó (Sopron, 1978) has been a full-time photographer for twenty years, the vice-president and active member of the Sopron Photo Club. In addition to digital techniques, analogue and archaic processes also play a central role in his creations – he is particularly fond of photographic processes from the 1850s, such as ambrotypes (glass plate images).

His photographic credo is centered on human emotion: as he puts it, “the only thing that will never be awkward in an old photograph is honest human emotion.”

Among his outstanding works is the 2024 “10FORRÁS20” photo exhibition in Hegykő, where he captured the cultural moments of the festival and the faces of the community.

three main steps

The world of analog photography is more than just image creation – it is a process that makes the experience of photography tangible. During this course, we will guide you through the life cycle of film: from shooting to development to digitization. You will learn how the raw material comes to life in the darkroom, how the negative image is transformed into a positive, and then how your image can be preserved in digital form. We will present the entire process through three main steps, so that you can accompany your own images from the beginning to their final form.

Negative develop

Film development is one of the most exciting parts of analog photography, where invisible memories slowly emerge on celluloid strips. You will learn the use of chemicals, the precise timing, and how to turn a seemingly blank film strip into a detailed negative. This is the first step, without which neither a paper image nor a digital version could be created – this is where the real magic begins.

Positive develop

Making a positive from a negative is a truly creative process. In the darkroom, under red light, with the help of a magnifying glass, the details come to life, and you see the result of your work on paper for the first time. You can experiment with contrast, the play of light and shadow, and experience what it feels like to see the final image born from your own hands. This is where the photo becomes truly personal.

Scanning

Once your images are created, we take advantage of the digital age: we digitize your negatives in a professional way. Scanning gives you the opportunity to easily share, archive, or further work on your physical photos in digital form. This way, the traditional analog experience meets modern technology – your images remain timeless and modern at the same time.

The presentation was great, we are learning this right now at school, and it was great to see it in action from someone who can test things and not just expose them under a magnifying glass.

Balazs Szekely

This was a very good, interesting and informative educational material. Gergely's professionalism was evident in every video. It was nice to see the whole process at once, from start to finish. Even though I had done the lab before, I still learned a lot of new things.
